General Election 2024

Hi there, I’m Marie Casserly, an Independent Councillor and dedicated advocate for the North West, and I have announced my candidacy in the upcoming 2024 General Election on November 29th. Known for my strong record on community infrastructure, sustainable growth, and local business support, I am ready to bring my results-focused leadership to a national level.

“The North West Deserves a Representative Who Delivers Real Results”

As an experienced Councillor, teacher, and community leader, I have a long-standing commitment to Sligo, Leitrim, and South Donegal. Our region deserves a representative who understands the needs of its people and has a proven track record of action. I am committed to advancing initiatives that improve our communities, strengthen local economies, and build a sustainable future. Together, we can make the North West a region where everyone can thrive.

Key Achievements and Ongoing Projects

I have championed a range of projects that have enhanced safety, connectivity, and economic vitality across the North West:

  • New Garda Station on Publicly Owned Lands: I have been instrumental in advocating for a new, strategically located Garda station in Sligo. This project will enhance community safety and support law enforcement with improved resources.
  • Pedestrian Crossings and Road Safety Initiatives: A strong advocate for road safety, I have helped secure funding for pedestrian crossings at crucial locations, including Doorly Park and the Ursuline area, and installed new bus stops, creating safer, more accessible public spaces.
  • Expanded Infrastructure for the Future: My impact on transportation includes securing €13 million for the Western Distributor Road, introducing Bolt Bikes to Sligo as a permanent feature, and working with Irish Rail to add a Broombridge stop for Sligo/Dublin trains.
  • Local Link Bus Routes: By lobbying for the establishment of new Local Link bus routes, I have expanded access to reliable public transportation for rural areas, improving connectivity and access to essential services.
  • Sligo Greenway and High-Speed Sligo to Galway Train Advocacy: I am a champion for the Sligo Greenway along the Collooney to Bellaghy railway line and support the introduction of a high-speed train between Sligo and Galway, linking the North West with key economic hubs.

Boosting the Local Economy and Supporting Businesses

As a former Chair of the Sligo Food Trail and a strong supporter of “Shop Local” campaigns, I have helped create numerous opportunities for small businesses to thrive. My successful Christmas “Shop Local” campaigns have bolstered local spending, supporting small businesses during critical times.

In addition, my election platform emphasizes sustainable and inclusive growth, promoting responsible climate action that meets Ireland’s commitments in a realistic manner, securing a healthy future for all citizens.

Improved Support for Health and Disability Services

Committed to enhancing health support services for the region, I advocate for improved services for children with disabilities, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy. By cutting wait times, I aim to address critical needs for children and families across Sligo, Leitrim, and South Donegal.

“Let’s Build a Better North West Together”

My candidacy is rooted in a genuine commitment to community-driven progress and practical solutions. My accomplishments are a testament to my ability to drive change, and with the backing of the people of Sligo, Leitrim, and South Donegal, I am eager to build on this momentum.

“With your support, we can continue making transformative changes for the North West. I ask for your number one vote on election day to bring our shared vision to life.”
